I was a newspaper writer almost since I could hold a pencil, but it is only recently that I realized that the same tool I use (and recommend to my clients) for managing stress is equally useful for increasing the effectiveness of my workouts. It may seem strange that something apparently settled that writing can help make a more efficient workout. When one considers, however, that without careful planning and constant tweaking, most fitness routines will fail to achieve the desired results, it becomes a little less surprising.

I use my journal to both motivate me, and to actively plan my routines - and I found it extremely useful in three main areas when it comes to my physical condition: - Planning - Monitoring - Related

PLANNING: The first thing I need to know when I plan a fitness routine is what I really want to achieve. This may seem obvious, but many people still do not understand that if they do not know what they want, they are very, very unlikely to get it. I use my journal to write about what I want - let me dream about what it will be like when I get it - to think in different ways I could go to achieve it - and to study possible obstacles could get in my way (and what I can do about it)

I also use it for shorter-term, detailed planning. Once I know what I want, I plan how I'm going to need to achieve to get there. When I am really committed to an objective fitness happen, I'll also use my journal for planning day to day - to decide what should be done and when to do my next Milstone.

ACTION: In addition to being useful in forward planning, my journal is a valuable ally in monitoring what I did, and for allowing me to see what happens with my progress over time. This helps motivate me to push myself harder (it's always easier to put more effort when you can see have the result you want). The best type of paper you use depends on the individual. Some people like to stick to the base, and are very happy with a notebook and pen. Others are happy just using a word processor and spreadsheet on their computer. I found, however, that when it comes to being able to track results over time, view them in graphic form, to organize information and search back through my files for any something I wrote months or even years ago, nothing beats dedicated logging software.
